Frequently Asked Questions
New to laser hair removal ? Here's everything you need to know!
If you are new to this treatment, take a few minutes to read the information below before your first appointment. We know technical details aren’t always exciting, but understanding how treatment works is important. At Pure Vanity Spa, client education is part of your overall satisfaction.
If you want to eliminate unwanted and unsightly hair comfortably, Pure Vanity Spa offers advanced solutions. We are one of the few centers in Arizona equipped with the latest Soprano ICE Diode Lasers and a fully trained, certified staff.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely interested in learning more about laser hair removal in Scottsdale, AZ , perhaps specifically “virtually painless” laser hair removal.
For decades, people have tried to remove unwanted hair using creams, devices, electrolysis, and earlier laser treatments.
Soprano ICE represents a significant advancement in laser technology, designed to reduce unwanted hair in a virtually painless, safe, effective, and long-lasting way. To stop hair growth, heat must reach the hair follicle. That heat needs to pass through the epidermis and penetrate the dermis.
Why? The hair follicle, the structure responsible for producing hair, resides in the dermal layer. Each follicle can produce a few hairs or many, depending on its location on the body.
How do we get enough heat to the follicle to destroy it, thereby preventing more hair production?
Earlier laser systems used a single, high-energy pulse to target the follicle. The handpiece had to be lifted and repositioned between each pulse until the entire area was treated. The downside? Those high-energy bursts often cause pain, sometimes significant, depending on the treatment area. For many patients, the discomfort was enough to make them hesitant to continue.
The Soprano ICE changed that experience. Instead of a single intense pulse, it delivers lower-energy pulses 10 times per second while the handpiece remains in motion. This allows us to gradually build the necessary heat in the area to destroy actively growing follicles, while remaining virtually painless and effective. No more sharp “rubber band snapping” sensation, just a safer, more comfortable way to eliminate unwanted hair.
Once a follicle is destroyed, it cannot produce hair again, resulting in a long-term reduction where it counts.
Why do you need more than one laser hair removal treatment?
Hair follicles grow in cycles, and they must be in the active growth phase (anagen) to be effectively destroyed. Because not all follicles are in this phase simultaneously, multiple treatments are required. This is often frustrating for patients who expect everything to disappear after one session, but timing is what makes treatment effective.
On average, most people require about six treatments to eliminate 80–90% of unwanted hair. By the sixth visit, we’ve typically targeted nearly all follicles in anagen, enabling us to destroy them permanently. Any remaining or future growth is usually finer and less dense and can be managed with occasional touch-up treatments.
Hormonal changes can also influence hair growth. Changes in birth control, hormone replacement therapy, or menopause may trigger new growth or hair in areas where it wasn’t present before. Being aware of these shifts helps set realistic expectations over time.
Are there medications that affect laser hair removal?
If you’re thinking of starting laser hair removal treatments in Scottsdale, AZ , here are some things to keep in mind. If you’ve been on the medication Accutane, you must be off the drug for at least 12 months before starting treatment.
Accutane makes your skin extremely photosensitive, and undergoing laser treatments will put you at a much higher risk for blisters and/or burns, and as you might have guessed, we don’t want to burn anyone!
If you’ve been off Accutane for 12 months or longer, it is safe for you to have laser treatments. Certain antibiotics can make your skin much more light-sensitive, so if you are on antibiotics or start taking antibiotics during your treatments, we will need to delay further treatment until the drugs are out of your system. Typically, 7-10 days after you’ve taken your last dose, it is safe to resume your laser treatments. The risks of receiving treatment while on antibiotics include an increased risk of burns or blisters.
If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, you are not a candidate for this treatment. During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant hormonal shifts. Some women experience hair thinning during pregnancy, while others experience much more aggressive hair growth. The bottom line is enjoy being pregnant, have your baby, let your hormones get back to normal, and then give us a call.
What about skin types and hair color?
The best candidates for hair removal are those with dark hair and light skin. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light energy from the laser, and the hair shaft acts as a conducting rod that transmits the heat down to the follicle. Get enough heat down there, and that follicle is gone!
Darker hair absorbs heat better than lighter hair. Fairer skin doesn’t attract the light, so essentially all of the laser energy goes to the dark pigment in the hair. This is the best-case scenario. Lighter hair will still respond well, but it has less pigment, so heat transmission is less effective. If you have lighter hair, you will likely need more than 6 sessions.
Darker skin tends to absorb some of the laser energy, so it steals away heat from the hair itself. This also reduces heat transfer efficiency, but you still achieve your goal of stopping unwanted hair growth. Again, you will need more than 6 sessions.
Gray hair, here’s the bad news. No laser has shown to be effective for treating gray hair! Why? Because there is no pigment in the gray hair, it’s as though there is no hair at all as far as the laser is concerned.
We have had some clients who have claimed we helped rid them of their gray hair, but because it can occur so unpredictably, we would not take you on as a client if your hair were gray. There is a good chance that you would see no change in your unwanted hair growth. Why waste your time and money! Typically, treatments are spaced 4-8 weeks apart, depending on factors such as the area being treated and the rate of hair growth.
What about shaving and waxing during laser treatments?
You may shave between treatments, but you may not wax, pluck, or tweeze. We need the hair to transmit heat to the follicle. When you wax, pluck, or tweeze, you pull the hair directly from the follicle, and we lose the ability to transfer heat to the follicle. Without the heat, we cannot kill the follicle.
Well, if you’ve made it this far, you must be seriously interested in getting rid of your unwanted hair. Oh, one last thing. Please shave the area you want treated the day before your appointment. There will be just enough growth for us to see where the hair is emerging from the skin. If you’re doing your bikini area and don’t want to remove all your hair, shave only what you want to remove, leaving the hair you want to keep. That way, our laser techs will know exactly what you want.
And finally, if you have any unanswered questions, please ask your laser technician when you come in for your first treatment.

I asked to nano-infuse the TCA peel. Teri was knowledgeable and friendly and I feel like the nano-infusion pushed way more of the TCA into my skin. My face was pretty pink and sensitive after but it was worth it! I’m only two days post peel and my skin is already shedding off the old layers! No matter who you see at the Hilton Village location, you’re in good hands!

Molly and Kim went above & Beyond in their care & service of me when I went in for a facial recently. I shared with them that I recently lost both my parents — we laid my Mother to rest in March & my Father in April.
My facial was on Mother’s Day…a gift from my son who lives in Texas.
As a former massage therapist I was very impressed & so grateful with their very kind, healing, professional, empathic hearts! & Molly, my aesthetician was superb! The hour spent there completely shifted my energy & my face is so happy & my grief soothed.
