Laser Hair Removal FAQs
At Pure Vanity Spa, education is integrated into every laser hair removal treatment. Understanding how hair grows, why treatments must be timed precisely, and how to care for your skin between visits allows you to make informed decisions with confidence.
Our assessment-first philosophy ensures that treatment settings, intervals, and expectations are aligned with your skin tone, hair characteristics, and comfort level. By using a structured approach, uncertainty is reduced, and progress can be made in a safe, consistent manner.
We also understand that previous experiences with outdated laser systems may have felt uncomfortable or ineffective. Our goal is to provide a calm, clinically guided environment where you feel respected, informed, and supported throughout your treatment series.
New to laser hair removal? Here's what you should know.
This works by delivering controlled heat to the hair follicle. The follicle, located within the dermis, is responsible for producing hair. To significantly reduce growth, thermal energy must reach this structure without damaging the surrounding skin. Modern laser platforms are designed to gradually heat the treatment area while incorporating cooling mechanisms to protect the epidermis.
This method improves comfort compared to older, high-intensity pulse systems that often caused sharp discomfort. When a follicle is effectively treated during the correct phase of growth, its ability to produce hair is significantly reduced. Over time, this leads to progressive, long-term hair reduction.
Why are multiple sessions necessary?
Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) respond optimally to laser treatment. Because not all follicles are synchronized in this phase, a series of sessions is required.
Most individuals complete approximately six treatments to achieve a substantial reduction.
Sessions are generally spaced 4-8 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area and growth rate. Hormonal factors, including changes related to birth control, menopause, or other medical conditions, may influence regrowth patterns over time. Maintenance sessions may be suggested for finer or newly stimulated hairs.
Are there medications or conditions that affect treatment?
Certain medications increase photosensitivity and may need temporary postponement of treatment. For example:
- Individuals who have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) must wait at least 12 months before beginning laser hair removal due to increased skin sensitivity.
- Some antibiotics can heighten light sensitivity; treatment may resume approximately 7–10 days after completing the medication, pending provider approval.
- Pregnancy is considered a contraindication for elective laser hair removal due to hormonal fluctuations and safety considerations.
By providing us with a complete medical history, you can prioritize safety and minimize risk.
What about skin tone and hair color?
Laser energy targets pigment within the hair shaft. Darker hair contains more melanin, allowing it to absorb light energy more efficiently and transfer heat to the follicle. This often results in a stronger response.
Lighter hair has less pigment and may need additional sessions for optimal reduction. Gray or white hair lacks sufficient pigment and does not reliably respond to laser treatment.
Darker skin tones can be treated safely when appropriate settings and technology are used. A complete assessment ensures energy levels are adjusted to protect the skin while targeting the follicle effectively.
Is it okay to shave or wax between sessions?
Shaving is allowed between treatments. However, waxing, plucking, or tweezing should be avoided. These methods remove hair from the follicle, eliminating the structure that transmits heat during laser treatment.
For best results, shave the treatment area the day before your appointment. This allows visible hair mapping without interfering with follicle targeting.
What should I expect during treatment?
Most individuals describe the sensation as gentle warmth combined with a cooling effect designed to enhance comfort. Modern laser systems are engineered to generate heat while gradually protecting the surrounding skin.
Session length depends on the size of the treatment area. Smaller areas, such as the upper lip or underarms, may take only a few minutes, while larger areas may need additional time for comprehensive coverage.
After treatment, temporary redness or mild warmth is common and usually resolves within a few hours. Your provider will review aftercare guidelines, including sun protection and skin-soothing recommendations, to support optimal healing and consistent progress.

I asked to nano-infuse the TCA peel. Teri was knowledgeable and friendly and I feel like the nano-infusion pushed way more of the TCA into my skin. My face was pretty pink and sensitive after but it was worth it! I’m only two days post peel and my skin is already shedding off the old layers! No matter who you see at the Hilton Village location, you’re in good hands!

Molly and Kim went above & Beyond in their care & service of me when I went in for a facial recently. I shared with them that I recently lost both my parents — we laid my Mother to rest in March & my Father in April.
My facial was on Mother’s Day…a gift from my son who lives in Texas.
As a former massage therapist I was very impressed & so grateful with their very kind, healing, professional, empathic hearts! & Molly, my aesthetician was superb! The hour spent there completely shifted my energy & my face is so happy & my grief soothed.
